Tinnitus is a condition that can be very hard to live with. Some people find it almost impossible, but it is not always obvious that this is what you have. You need to know what signs that you should be looking out for to know if you have tinnitus or not.

Ringing in your ears

The first common symptom is going to be ringing in your ears. This is the one that most people experience and it can be loud or quiet. It usually becomes louder when there are no other noises around and this is when it can be hardest to deal with. You might find that it is louder at certain points during the day. If you do notice this symptom, then you should book an appointment with your audiologist. They will be able to tell you if you have tinnitus and then recommend what the next steps are going to be.

Buzzing in your ears

The next symptom you might experience is like the first, but with buzzing. Really, any noise that is constantly in your ears could be a sign of tinnitus. Whether it is buzzing, whistling, white noise or anything like this, you should consider that you might be developing tinnitus. Again, this is when you should visit your audiologist. Before you go to this appointment, it will be helpful if you write down your symptoms, when they occur or when they are loudest, so that you don’t forget any of this information when you attend your appointment.

Temporary noise

You can have what is known as temporary tinnitus and this is the first sign that you are developing the condition. This usually occurs if you have been around loud noises such as to a nightclub and then you notice that there is ringing in your ears. This should go away rather quickly and this is how you will know that it was temporary. However, you should take precautions after this to ensure that it doesn’t get any worse. This is going to include wearing ear protection to any event that has loud noise from now on.

Headaches

The final symptom that you should look out for is headaches. Tinnitus can cause headaches in some people and even though this is slightly less common, it does still occur. So, if you are having headaches more than you used to, if they are more intense or accompanied by ringing, you should again book an appointment with your audiologist. This could end up having negative impacts on your life and they will be able to tell you how to move forward from here.

If you require any further information, contact your audiologist and they will be happy to go through all of the information with you.
